Position Summary:

The Hauf Lab at Virginia Tech is looking for a laboratory assistant to help in a project that analyzes the molecular basis of the low ‘noise’ in the expression of mitotic checkpoint genes. The lab uses yeast as model organism. The lab assistant will use immunoblotting, single molecule mRNA FISH, and quantitative fluorescence microscopy to characterize the abundance and variation of mRNAs and proteins, and will create new genetically modified yeast strains using CRISPR/Cas9-technology. Excellent record-keeping is essential. Additional tasks will include preparing reagents, and helping other group members with their experiments.

Required Qualifications:

- Significant laboratory experience.
- Experience working with yeast.
- Basic biochemical skills (SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting).
- Basic experience with molecular cell biology (PCR, transformations).
- Basic computer experience.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to learn new procedures andwillingness to work in a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Bachelor of Science degree in biology or a related discipline or equivalent training and/or experience.
- Experience with fluorescence microscopy.
- Experience in using CRISPR/Cas9 techniques.
