Position Summary:

Link, The Center for Advancing Industry Partnerships, is seeking to fill several Director or Associated Director of Technology Commercialization positions. Link was founded to support an integrated and holistic approach to industry partnerships and innovation management based on a Discovery to Market model. Link is a strategic center within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation at Virginia Tech, which oversees the university-wide strategic initiatives and operational functions of Virginia Tech’s $520+ million research enterprise. The positions are key to the ambitious plans Virginia Tech is making to be a leading 21st century land grant university that delivers innovative solutions to the most pressing global challenges of our time.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Link, the successful candidates will facilitate the commercialization of technologies, manage intellectual property and related assets, and foster strategic relationships with industry partners in collaboration with the broader Link team. The Director or Associate Director will not only manage intellectual property licensing, but also work closely with faculty, staff, and students on the full lifecycle of licensing-related activities. The positions will assess commercial applications of new technologies, identify and vet prospective partners, perform valuations/develop value proposition hypotheses, and implement strategies for the marketing of technologies.

In this innovation management role, the Director or Associate Director will:
- Solicit, assess, and manage an extensive portfolio of technologies from Discovery to Market engaging in a full range of commercialization activities including: research/analysis, IP management, partner identification and relationship management, marketing, and negotiation.
- Lead (for director role) or work within a matrixed team with business development professionals, contract negotiators within Office of Sponsored Programs, university development professionals, and other technology commercialization professionals, as well as with faculty, staff, and students.
- Collaborate with and inform a wide range of stakeholders about the full commercialization process when research should be protected and marketed, when research fits commercial product development, etc.
- Proactively develop strategies (for director role) and support the development of strategies for management of Virginia Tech’s intellectual property assets and implement plans for new IP protection and commercialization.
- Serve as (lead for director level) a negotiator, negotiating terms for agreements, including licenses and options, with equity terms and conditions.
- Create non-confidential technology briefs, prepare marketing packages and distribute via both passive and active means: (1) passive efforts might include postings on relevant websites; (2) active efforts might include direct connection to targeted commercialization partners.
- Manage patent prosecution with external patent counsel to assure the patent strategy is followed, and intellectual property rights are appropriately protected.
- Lead (for director level) or work with staff to improve and maintain procedures for administrative efficiency, develop internal forms and systems as needed, and provide reports to Virginia Tech leadership and others as necessary.
- Maintain productive relationships with all campus and external organizations that play a role in technology transfer and enterprise creation.
- Ensure compliance with Virginia Tech, State and Federal laws, regulations and policies applicable to technology transfer and intellectual property.
- Be an active leader (for director level) or member of the Virginia Tech community of practice for technology transfer and commercialization, by providing guidance and serving as a resource to other community members.

Required Qualifications:

- Master’s Degree OR Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, engineering, business, or law and demonstrated progressively advanced experience in university technology commercialization/transfer experience.
- Experience/knowledge in key technical and/or functional areas, such as innovation/portfolio management in scientific and/or engineering, licensing, commercialization, and deal structuring.
- Ability to manage a complex portfolio of diverse technologies and carry multiple, extended projects concurrently through to completion, with respect to technology development, milestones, and non-financial terms of the licenses.
- Proven track record of analyzing technologies, markets, competitive information; developing financial/business models; and drafting technical communications.
- Demonstrated experience in drafting and negotiating agreements for licensing and transfer of materials with understanding and experience of marketing technologies.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills; a flexible outlook, and the ability to handle peak stress periods with logic and a calm demeanor.
- Team player with proven analytical and strategic capabilities.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present written or oral materials in a concise and professional manner.
- Willingness to travel on an infrequent basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Doctorate in a physical science, engineering, business, or law.
- Previous experience in a complex, research-driven environment, as well as demonstration of effective collaboration with a wide variety of industry and legal professionals.
- Proven success in building productive relationships and facilitation with senior executives, administrators, key business leaders, faculty, staff, institutional boards, volunteers, and/or donors.
- Previous business development/strategy experience developing progressively complex strategies and using data analytics, technical/domain knowledge and information, and competitive/market intelligence to guide decision making.

- Commitment to support regional and national travel which may include overnights and weekends. Must have the ability and willingness to travel using standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation regionally (e.g., Blacksburg, Roanoke, and Northern Virginia locations, and other campus locations across the state) and in some cases, nationally, to meet with industry partners, attend conferences, and engage with the scientific and business community.
