Position Summary:

Reporting to the Fire Protection/Elevator Manager in Facilities, the Fire Protection/Elevator Technician performs skilled work related to the installation, inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, modification, and repair of fire alarm systems, wet/dry fire sprinkler systems, and chemical suppression systems, along with fire extinguishers and all related components and equipment.

The position also:
– Performs work in accordance with National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), State Fire Marshal’s Office, University Building Official, and any other code or regulatory requirements.
– Assists with coordination of contracted elevator service providers for maintenance, repair, and inspection of elevators.
– Oversees critical day-to-day operations in supervisor’s absence.
– Maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing and maintenance performed.
– Updates equipment documentation, specifications and drawings, as needed.
– Reviews blueprints and specifications for new construction and retrofit/renovation projects.
– Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of resolving immediate safety concerns.
– Performs all job duties in adherence with university and departmental safety guidelines.
– Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty, and students.

This position is expected to make operational decisions that can directly affect the health and life safety of others. May be required to adjust work hours due to emergency situations.

Required Qualifications:

- Experience in fire prevention preventative maintenance, repair, testing, and inspection; and/or completion of a certified fire/life/safety or electrician apprenticeship program; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Working knowledge of maintenance, operation, repair, calibration, installation, diagnosis, and required inspection of industrial/commercial fire protection systems, fire suppression equipment, all types of water-based fire protection systems, and related equipment.
- In-depth knowledge of building systems and structures with respect to fire prevention requirements and associated codes.
- Demonstrated experience performing troubleshooting techniques and skilled in the use of electronic testing devices and hand-held power tools.
- Experience in, and the ability to read and understand documents such as complex technical procedures, work instructions, blueprints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
- Experience using computers to manage work assignments, generate reports, and track inventory.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, and provide exceptional customer service.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to record information accurately as is necessary to perform the job responsibilities.
- Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Working knowledge of elevators.
- Experience troubleshooting, inspecting, repairing, and/or testing Simplex fire alarm systems.
- Experience troubleshooting, inspecting, testing, and/or repairing sprinkler systems.
- Related experience in a large, complex institutional setting.

- May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
- Ability to work in confined and dusty spaces and wear a respirator or other required safety gear.
- Ability to work around and be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells, dangerous and/or hazardous substances.
- Ability to drive a van or pick-up truck and ability to safely work around moving vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
- Must be able to wear a respirator.
- Must be able to safely operate equipment needed to perform job functions.
