Position Summary:

The Student Success Center (SSC) is a department in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs and reports to the Assistant Provost for Student Success Initiatives. The Student Success Center (SSC) designs and implements programs and services that promote the success and excellence of Virginia Tech students throughout their educational journey. The Assistant/Associate Director is a 12-month professional faculty position reporting to the Director. The Assistant/Associate Director provides leadership in and direct oversight for developing learning assistance programming, tutoring services and academic skills develop efforts intended to improve student’s academic performance and persistence towards successful completion of the baccalaureate degree.

Duties/Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Assist the Director in the strategic planning and implementation of assessment measures for overall program effectiveness with a focus on access, retention and student success

- Provide guest lectures and class presentations as requested

- Develop and implement annual programming and signature events, ensuring that programs are intentional, collaborative, inclusive and effectively promoted campus-wide

- Perform outcome assessment and create a strategic plan to enhance programs and services

- Develop and maintain strategic relationships and collaborations with faculty, campus and community partners and alumni

- Provide educational support and skill development to assist students in becoming independent and intentional learners

- Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate student staff members

- Promote the SSC to new and current students by participating in orientations, resources fairs and other events

- Provide oversight for the academic program budget

- Provide oversight and management (i.e., recruit, hire, train, supervise and assess) of the SSC’s peer education programs: The SSC Tutoring Program and the SSC Ambassador Program

- Develop a comprehensive schedule of student support services to meet specific student needs each semester based on all course offerings to include in-person and virtual tutoring, exam review sessions, drop-in hours and academic seminars

- Maintain College Reading and Learning Association certification of Tutoring Program and manage certification credentials for all tutors

- Approve hiring and payroll changes in Banner

- Design curriculum and coordinate the Seminar Series on Academic Success
- Assist with curriculum design and teaching one or more sections of UNIV 1004: College Success Strategies

- Serve as the SSC liaison for the EAB/Student Success Collaborative which consist of coordinate the tutoring program scheduling and alerts/case management referrals

- Co-advise the CommonWEALTH of Scholars student organization

- Represent the Student Success Center on various University committees

- Additional duties, opportunities and projects may be offered or assigned based on departmental goals

Required Qualifications:

- Master’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in college student personnel, counseling, or a related field

- Experience in higher education instruction, learning assistance, advising, academic support center management, or similar related experience

- Experience in designing and implementing academic support programs

- Experience working with students from first generation, low income, rural communities and other diverse backgrounds

- Ability to effectively collaborate with staff, faculty, and administrators

- Strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership, and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

- Undergraduate teaching experience

- Experience hiring, training and supervising undergraduate students in professional settings

- Ability to identify and respond to educational trends and institutional needs

- Knowledge and practice of adult education theory of teaching and engagement, as well as of student success theories

- Experience with program design and evaluation
