Position Summary:

The School of Performing Arts (www.performingarts.vt.edu) at Virginia Tech seeks to fill the position of Director of Athletic Bands at the rank of Advanced Instructor. This appointment is a three-year, 12-month, renewable, non-tenure track appointment beginning May 14, 2018. Primary responsibilities include overseeing all creative and administrative aspects of the athletic band program, directing the 330-member Marching Virginians, collaborating with and supervising the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands, coordinating Pep Band, Symphony Band and Campus Band. The successful candidate will teach supporting courses in the Department of Music, which may include music education or other courses depending on the candidate’s qualifications and departmental needs. The person filling this position will teach the equivalent of four credit-bearing courses each semester. It is expected that the candidate will have evidence of successful leadership within a major college athletic band program (Division I preferred), exemplary skills in show design, and demonstrated artistry as a band conductor.

The successful candidate will: work effectively with colleagues within the Department of Music and the Athletic Department; engage in recruitment and outreach activities including honors festivals, events, and clinics; serve on various committees within the School of Performing Arts, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and university; and perform other duties as assigned. The candidate is expected to have excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Salary is commensurate with experience. Screening of applications begins March 18, 2018, and will continue until the position is filled. Candidates should also include drill charts (pdf) of a complete halftime show which the candidate designed and an optional score (pdf) to a musical arrangement of a composition the candidate arranged for marching band. MUSIC PROGRAM: The music program has an enrollment of more than 100 music majors and a faculty and staff of 30. Students and faculty present over 100 concerts and events each academic year. In addition to students in the music major, the music program offers instruction to students representing every college at Virginia Tech.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Music. Evidence of successful leadership, outstanding performance and administrative success as a college marching band director, and a record of significant experience as a band conductor and classroom teacher at the university and secondary level required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctorate in hand by the start date; an excellent record of teaching and conducting athletic and concerts bands at the collegiate level for a minimum of five years; evidence of successful leadership within a major college athletic band program (Division I preferred); and a record of supervising and mentoring students.
