Position Summary:

The Interactive Neurorehabilitation Lab at Virginia Tech invites applications for a post-doctoral research position in computer vision and machine learning to work on an exciting project developing home-based interactive systems for unsupervised stroke therapy. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop new computer vision techniques and machine learning algorithms in a challenging, impactful, and fast moving research space. The position will be affiliated with the Interactive Neurorehabilitation (INR) Lab at Virginia Tech led by Dr. Aisling Kelliher and Dr. Thanassis Rikakis. The INR lab is an interdisciplinary research group with faculty and students from Computer Science, Bioengineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Design. The successful candidate will work with the INR lab on ongoing collaborations with Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, Emory Rehabilitation Hospital, Arizona State University, and Carnegie Mellon University. The successful candidate will carry out the ongoing design, implementation, and evaluation of the HOMER system, an interactive system for lightly supervised home based stroke rehabilitation.
Expected responsibilities include:

  • Designing and implementing interactive systems for analyzing movement quality
  • Designing and conducting research studies in the clinic and in the home
  • Capturing and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data
  • Mentoring and collaborating with graduate and undergraduate research assistants
  • Co-authoring research papers and presenting results at research conferences

This is a 1 year, full-time non-tenure track position consisting of an initial appointment for one year with an anticipated renewal for a second year. The position includes salary, benefits, and travel support. The position will be under the supervision of Dr. Jia-Bin Huang and Dr. Aisling Kelliher and the expected start date is August 15th, 2018. All Ph.D. degree requirements must be complete before starting the position. The postdoc must be able to relocate to Blacksburg, a vibrant college town in southwestern Virginia.

Required Qualifications:
  • A doctoral degree in computer science, computer engineering or related field
  • Strong research track record, with publications in top computer vision, machine learning and/or computer science conferences and journals
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with the design, implementation, and evaluation of interactive systems
  • Strong quantitative data analysis skills
  • Experience designing and conducting lab-based or home-based research studies of interactive systems
  • Strong communication skills
