Virginia Tech actively seeks a broad spectrum of candidates to join our community in preparing leaders for the world.

Position Summary:

Responsibilities of the Department Head include leadership of all department programs and administrative responsibility for strategic planning, fiscal management, and human resources. This includes recruitment, development, and retention of faculty and staff. The Department Head should provide effective advocacy for the department within and outside the university, and actively secure resources to strengthen its mission. The ALCE department currently consists of 21 faculty and staff, as well as 18 graduate students on assistantship funding, plus many others in online and professional programs. The department is housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (www.cals.vt.edu/) which has approximately 3,200 students across 10 academic units. (Virginia Tech’s total enrollment is approximately 34,000.) The ALCE department is dedicated to advancing the institutional priorities related to community viability by engaging in critical and evaluative social science processes that address local and global challenges through three core areas: teaching and learning in agriculture; leadership and social change; and community education and development. The department is committed to preparing students for success in professions that include formal and non-formal teaching and learning in agriculture and community development, and equipping them with skills to lead agricultural organizations and communities. The faculty has successfully obtained research grants from USDA, NSF, USAID, eXtension, and state and industry sources. Additionally, faculty have been extensively involved in interdisciplinary collaboration within the university, as well as nationally and globally.
