Position Summary:

This position provides an opportunity for biofuel sorghum research and High Throughput Phenotyping (HTP) for variety selection and management. The position will be located within the Crop Physiology project at the Virginia Tech’s Tidewater Agricultural Research and Experiment Center in Suffolk, VA. The main responsibilities are leading the fieldwork for data collection, management to assess agronomy and physiology of water use efficiency, and to optimize biofuel biomass production including nitrogen use and seeding rate (70%).
Other responsibilities include field remote phenotyping and data analytics (30%). Hyperspectral remote sensing of crop performance includes ground and aerial platforms. Writing peer-reviewed publications, reports, and grant proposals and presenting research results at professional meetings are expected. The position requires weekly travel to the testing sites in southeastern Virginia, constant communication with collaborators in North Carolina and South Carolina, and occasional travels to meeting in these states. The position requires a solid understanding of agronomic and plant science principles, accuracy with data collection, and work well with others in a team.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, Biosystems Engineering, Computer Science, Plant Physiology, or related disciplines. Ability to independently design (statistically) an experiment, execute field research (from planting to post-harvest), and analyze and interpret the results (linear and non-linear models in SAS, JMP, Systat, etc.) documented by the record of publications. Ability to give and follow orders; communicate effectively in English (in oral and writing); good organizational skills; must have a valid driving license and record.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in data analytics, visualization, and good record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at professional meetings.
