Position Summary:

The data analyst will assist in the creation of data extraction specifications, and then extract, process, and export driving datasets from much larger databases. The data analyst will also oversee the transfer of these datasets to sponsors and monitor and control the quality of the data extractions. The analyst will also oversee the execution of external algorithms on the internal datasets, ensuring that data integrity and security are maintained, and that minimum efficiency thresholds are surpassed. In these processes, the analyst will consider the research questions that are being asked, the feasibility of different sampling strategies, the efficiency of the code being used, and the need for validation strategies, as applicable. In doing so, the analyst will draw upon his or her in-depth understanding of naturalistic driving data and statistical analysis techniques. The data analyst will also prepare documents such as monthly/quarterly progress reports, flow-charts, work plans, comprehensive presentations, interim and final reports suitable for all levels and management and sponsors.

Duties and responsibilities:
-Structures and filters large behavioral data sets, integrating relational databases
-Establishes methods to quantify the accuracy and completeness of the datasets extracted or algorithm overlays executed
-Tracks the progress of extraction or overlay jobs and responds to process breakdowns
-Works with database administrators and managers to resolve problems, maximize efficiency, and improve processes
-Writes well-documented, concise, and reliable code to perform the required tasks
-Generates graphical and tabular summaries of data extracted or utilized
-Works with supervisor and other researchers to support their analysis needs
-Generates summary reports for management and customers
-Collaborates in the development of data dictionaries and in the production of comprehensive reports and presentations suitable for project sponsors
-Assists in addressing internal and external inquiries made about datasets maintained at VTTI
-Assists in tracking project progress and costs
-Independently performs most assignments with instructions on global objectives and general results expected.
-May supervise/mentor/provide training and coordinate the work of graduate research assistants, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.

Required Qualifications:

-Masters’ degree in statistics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or computer-related field. In lieu of Master’s degree employer will consider lesser degree with significant work experience and/or experience in statistical research
-Proficiency with relational database programming in SQL required
-Experience with multiple programming languages required
-Experience in preparing and delivering comprehensive presentations and reports suitable for all levels of management
-Creative, independent, and highly motivated, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
-Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
-Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as with a team
