Position Summary:

Virginia Tech’s School of Education is in a major recruitment initiative designed to build our capacity for excellence in research, teaching and high-impact outreach. In the tradition of a land-grant, research-extensive university, we seek a scholar at the rank of Assistant Professor in Higher Education dedicated to engaging in quality research and making a visible contribution to the lives of our constituents through inquiry, leadership, and advocacy.

The Higher Education program resides in the School of Education. The responsibilities of the position include: developing/maintaining a systematic line of high quality and rigorous research and scholarship in the field; developing applications for sponsored research in one’s area of interest; seeking and/or securing external funding to support research and programming/research, outreach, and programming; teaching and advising graduate students in the Higher Education program; and possessing a deep commitment to social justice and scholarly rigor in both research and practice. The successful applicant should be prepared to offer courses in his/her area(s) of expertise and/or areas of program needs. The standard teaching load is two/two courses per academic year. Additional responsibilities include general advising, serving on examining committees, and collaborating with other faculty. The position may include occasional travel to attend professional meetings or conferences, and a criminal background check is required of all candidates recommended for employment. Required Qualifications:

Successful candidate must have
1. an earned doctorate in higher education, student affairs, or a closely related field of study by the time of appointment (August 10, 2018).
2. the ability to apply current qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed methods research skills to contemporary problems in education.
3. experience working with diverse populations in college or university settings.
4. excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with university faculty, staff, and students as evidenced in application materials and interview.

Preferred Qualifications:

Successful candidates may have
1. evidence of successful college or university administrative experience.
2. experience advising M.A.Ed. and Ph.D. students.
3. experience directing M.A.Ed. and Ph.D. committees.
4. evidence of effective teaching experience (face-to-face, online, hybrid).
