Position Summary: | This appointment is a full-time research position for a postdoctoral associate to research the physical basis of biological mineralization. The Department of Energy-funded project is focused using model chemical systems to determine the kinetics and thermodynamics of mineral nucleation onto functionalized macromolecular substrates. Using quantitative structural and wet chemistry techniques, the Associate will design, conduct, and verify experimental investigations of CaCO3 nucleation onto inorganic-organic interfaces. Responsibilities of the Associate also include writing research articles on the findings for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Research from our group is recognized in the crystal growth, biomineralization, materials, and geochemical communities. Preference will be given to persons with expertise in 1) preparing and characterizing films that simulate model proteins/peptides; 2) experience with wet lab chemical methods; and 3) high resolution amorphous/crystalline material structure characterization methods. Some travel to conduct collaborative research at the national laboratories and to present at national conferences will be expected. |
Required Qualifications: | PhD in geochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, or closely related field. Persons with skills in synthesizing engineered proteins and macromolecules are encouraged to apply. |
Preferred Qualifications: | Experience handling high-purity aqueous solutions, preparation of gels, films, TEM, SEM and microprobe analyses. |
