Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Northern Virginia Operations of Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute (VTLCI), the Assistant Director for Special Programs is responsible for the VTLCI’s overall operation, management, and coordination of orientation, testing, academic coursework, advisory group assignments, off-site events, training programs, K-12 school visits, receptions, and other activities as assigned that are related to a one-year, renewable, contracted secondary teacher training program. Responsibilities include organizing all facets of assigned program, hiring and training of program staff, serving as direct supervisor to the Special Programs Program Coordinator and Program Assistant; coordinating in service and pre-service trainings; developing new programs and courses; creating, updating, and reviewing program information and informational guidelines, policies, and procedures. As part of the VTLCl’s academic leadership team, the Assistant Director for Special Programs is expected to attend and/or coordinate workshops, classes, field visits, and conferences as required. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Position subject to funding.

Required Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in Education or related field
- Prior experience in program administration, organizational planning, or serving as an administrator in an education environment
- Supervisory experience
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies to ensure program goals are met
- Demonstrated ability to interact and work effectively with a diverse population
- Ability to adapt well to unexpected situations and re-prioritize assignments according to changing circumstances
- Ability to multitask and successfully complete multiple projects at the same time
- Excellent communication, writing, database, time management, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience with public speaking and giving public presentations
- Familiarity with Virginia public education system
- Experience working in diverse environments
- Knowledge of Arabic
- Experience working with university students and/or professionals from the Middle East
