Position Summary:

The Physics Department at Virginia Tech invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in theoretical condensed matter (in the group of Prof. Park), with focus on electronic structure and magnetic properties of lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets and related nanostructures, beyond density-functional theory. The successful applicant must be able to conduct research on the aforementioned topic under a moderate supervision, to collaborate with theorists and experimentalists on the topic, to occasionally supervise graduate and/or undergraduate students, and to travel nationally and/or abroad in order to give talks at conferences, meetings, or workshops. The position is available starting from January 2018 or later, and is renewable for up to two additional years after the first year, upon mutual agreement. Collaborations with theorists and experimentalists are expected.

Required Qualifications:

The successful applicant must have a recent Ph.D. in either theoretical condensed matter physics, theoretical quantum chemistry or a closely related field, and have knowledge in magnetism and electronic structure calculations, such as:
Background in electronic structure calculations.
Experience with programming language, Unix commands, and parallel computing
Advanced knowledge of magnetism, quantum mechanics, and theoretical solid state or condensed matter physics
Good collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with code development
Advanced knowledge of theoretical quantum chemistry beyond density-functional theory
Strong electron correlations
