Position Summary:

The Extension Agent, FCS, SNAP Education position provides overall coordination in: planning, developing, and implementing policy, systems, and environmental changes related to food and physical activity; directing volunteer and community-based obesity prevention programs; delivering programs that will further VCE initiatives; and for building community capacity and forging partnerships in opportunistic areas of improvement for SNAP eligible individuals and families. In addition, the agent will increase adult and youth awareness of nutritious foods and the importance of physical activity, and promote obesity prevention initiatives through partnerships with community groups and organizations such as the Health Ambassadors, local school system, and Virginia Department of Health, among many others. Family and Consumer Science (FCS) agent positions require a service mentality as well as process and subject matter expertise. Extension agents demonstrate flexibility, adaptability; a team-oriented mindset, yet are able to work effectively independently, and a strong desire to help clients succeed.

This position is tentatively planned to be housed in Abingdon, VA (Washington County) and will cover the following counties in the Southwest District: Bland, Pulaski, Grayson, Wythe, Galax City, Smyth and Carroll.

This position is a Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Family Nutrition Program (FNP) agent position. Although considered restricted funds, the grant has been renewed annually since 1996.

Required Qualifications:

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a nutrition related field from an accredited university or college with the ability to attain a Master’s degree by the sixth year of employment; experience recruiting and managing volunteers and implementing effective volunteer education methodologies; experience working collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders, community organizations, and/or Extension Agents and staff to reach limited-income populations; experience planning and implementing programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience in leading programs that effectively involve people from different cultural and/or racial, ethnic, socio-economic backgrounds; large project management. A master’s degree is preferred.

Employment Comments:

Individuals will be hired at the Associate Extension Agent title level. A master’s degree and promotion to Extension Agent are required no later than the sixth year of employment.
