Position Summary:

In the role of IT Manager, the incumbent will provide management and oversight of the Department of Mining and Minerals computing facilities. This role also develops and administers hardware, software and instrumentation systems to support teaching, research and extension programs within the department. This position provides quality service to faculty, staff, and graduate students with the use of computer hardware, software, security, networks, and specialized mainframe technology. This role oversees the administration of the helpdesk ticketing system and ensures prioritization of requests for assistance. This role supports desktop configurations, peripherals and accounts, and installs relevant software and connections including automatic updates of operating systems, vital software, and security programs. This position utilizes computer equipment, software and diagnostic tools to perform a broad range of customer assistance, equipment maintenance and repair, and computer operations assignments. Uses project management and risk assessment tools to plan, analyze, and manage team activities. This role serves as the lead on development and implementation of short and long term projects.

Required Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, engineering or related area or significant work experience that equates to a Bachelor’s degree.
-Experience in managing department’s computer laboratories and servers;
-Experience in designing, developing, and analyzing computer systems, based on individual and department needs;
-Demonstrated experience in decision making regarding the security of computers and website.
-Additional qualifications include, knowledge of PC, Microsoft, Apple and Google products and operating systems;
-Professional experience and proficiency working with enterprise networking;
-Demonstrated knowledge of project management standards;
-Skill and knowledge in using a variety of tools to strategize, map, and complete projects within designated timeframes;
-Skill at managing team members and stakeholder expectations in the face of scope change, competing demands, and task surges;
-Experience in forming relationships quickly to troubleshoot successfully and manage customer concerns.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Master’s degree or equivalent experience in information systems, computer science, engineering, or related area.
-Experience in designing, develop, and implement computer software for Automations Laboratories.
-Previous experience working with faculty in support of sponsored research in at least one of the following areas related to mining: cybersecurity, data analytics, automation/robotics.
-Previous experience related to the mining industry.
-Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Virginia Tech Policies for Information Technology and Computer Privacy.
-Experience or knowledge of Virginia Tech procedures for network administration.
