Position Summary:

The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for a tenure-track/tenured open-rank faculty position in electrical engineering, in the area of electrical energy conversion. Future electronic energy systems are envisioned to supersede the existing energy systems that are powering our way of life, from mobile phones and medical implants, to home appliances and lighting, information and communication technology, smart design and construction, building automation and HVAC, smart cities, fresh and waste water processing, agricultural and mining operations, industry processing and automation, robotics and autonomous vehicles, to ground-, air-, and sea-transportation. The production, transfer, storage, and consumption of energy in all of these applications requires ever smaller and more efficient power conversion systems and components. Virginia Tech is expanding its research and education program in the energy conversion by seeking candidates with interest and expertise in interdisciplinary areas that complement its current strengths, including electrical machines, mechatronics, motor drives, energy harvesting, wireless power transfer, power semiconductor devices, power ICs, high-density integration and packaging of semiconductor, magnetic, dielectric, conductive, thermal, and structural materials and components, etc.

The candidate is expected to be a significant contributor to the ongoing growth of the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) and the Center for Power and Energy (CPE), and other centers and research groups within the department and the different colleges that compose the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area <provost.vt.edu/destination-areas/da-infrastructure .html> at Virginia Tech. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a strong nationally-recognized funded-research program and laboratories, a specialized graduate curriculum, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and participate in department, college, and university service and outreach activities, contributing vigorously towards the learning, discovery, and engagement missions of Virginia Tech. The candidate will be able to choose the primary work location in either Blacksburg or vicinity of Washington, DC.

Required Qualifications:

- An earned Ph.D. in electrical engineering, material science, or a closely related field, completed prior to employment
- Demonstrated excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching, or evidence of high potential for such excellence
- Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research and scholarship in energy conversion, and to identify potential funding sources to support such research

Preferred Qualifications:

- Prior experience in the role of PI or Co-PI on funded research projects
- Interest or experience in mentoring students, both undergraduate or graduate, in research
- Interest or experience in working effectively with a diverse student population
