Position Summary:

The Department of Sociology invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Black Feminisms. The appointment will begin Fall 2018 and will be a part of the department’s Africana Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies programs. All applicants must have a Ph.D. in hand at the start of appointment, contribute to the department’s graduate and undergraduate programs, maintain a program of research excellence, and participate in a new university-wide initiative (see below).  The normal teaching load is two courses each semester.
Applicants should have knowledge and skills related to the university’s Equity and Social Disparity in the Human Condition strategic growth area (http://inclusive.vt.edu/ESDHC.html) as well as willingness to contribute to the College of Liberal Arts and Human Science’s strengths in narrating the human experience, diversity, and social justice. In addition to having and/or demonstrating the potential for an active research agenda, the successful applicant will possess the capacity to teach courses in both the Africana Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies programs including, but not limited to race, class, gender, and sexualities; feminist methodologies; Black women in the US; feminist theory; special topics in Black feminism; race and gender in religion and culture; and topics in Africana Studies. Applicants whose research focuses on race, gender and environmental inequality, or on health disparities, are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful applicant will contribute critical perspectives to a university-wide, interdisciplinary initiative to enhance curriculum and research focused on Equity and Social Disparity in the Human Condition (ESDHC). ESDHC is a strategic growth area that seeks to explore and analyze crucial issues related to diversity, especially those highlighted through the application of the analytical lens of intersectionality. Faculty engaged in this area seek to highlight the ways in which issues of identity, equity, and social disparity impact multiple academic disciplines, fields of study, and areas of inquiry.

Required Qualifications:

PhD in Sociology or related field at the time start of appointment.
Capacity to teach courses in both the Africana Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies programs including, but not limited to race, class, gender, and sexualities; feminist methodologies; Black women in the US; feminist theory; special topics in Black feminism; race and gender in religion and culture; and topics in Africana Studies.

Preferred Qualifications:
