About Virginia Tech:

Virginia Tech is strategically investing in hiring innovative faculty to advance its vision to grow beyond boundaries as a premier 21st-century global land-grant institution through our Destination Areas initiative. As interconnected areas of strength, Destination Areas facilitate faculty collaborations that bridge disciplines to create innovative and transformative solutions to global issues, while positioning Virginia Tech as a premier destination for talent that seeks to advance the human condition. More information on Virginia Tech’s Beyond Boundaries vision can be found online (beyondboundaries.vt.edu).

Building on its motto of Ut Prosim (that I may serve), Virginia Tech is dedicated to InclusiveVT—serving in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. We seek candidates who adopt and practice the Principles of Community, which are fundamental to our on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion, and to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Virginia Tech actively seeks a broad spectrum of candidates to join our community in preparing leaders for the world.

Position Summary:

In support of the university’s strategic initiatives, Virginia Tech is recruiting a robust and diverse cluster of faculty interested in contributing to transdisciplinary research, teaching, and/or outreach initiatives that align with our Global Systems Science Destination Area. With commitments in this area from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and the College of Veterinary Medicine, the university is specifically seeking faculty interested in engaging with research and curricular initiatives that support innovation and problem solving at the intersection of natural and social systems, with a focus on promoting equity in the human condition. Faculty with expertise in disciplinary areas such as Aquatic Entomology, Environmental Epidemiology, Cumulative Risk Assessment, Human/Ecological Risk Assessment, Oral/Public History, Local/Regional History, Digital History, Environmental History, or with interdisciplinary backgrounds will be uniquely positioned to help the university advance these efforts.

Virginia Tech recognizes the vital importance of inclusion and diversity for our campus community in achieving excellence in all of our work and study. The university continues to diversify faculty, staff, and students along multiple dimensions, including those that have been historically marginalized and excluded. Through committed university efforts such as AdvanceVT and InclusiveVT (inclusive.vt.edu), the university continues to build institutional and individual commitment to its motto of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. Further, we seek scholars who are committed to fostering an environment in which faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and personal experiences are welcomed and can thrive.

The Global Systems Science Destination Area fosters transdisciplinary study of the dynamic interplay between natural and social systems. Faculty in this area collaborate to discover creative solutions to critical social problems emergent from human activity and environmental change, in areas such as freshwater and coastal water systems, rural environments, infectious disease, and food production and safety. Work in this area also embraces equity in the human condition by seeking the equitable distribution and availability of physical safety and well-being, psychological well-being, respect for human dignity, and access to crucial material and social resources throughout the world’s diverse communities. Visit provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html for more information about this initiative.

Successful candidates will engage in Global Systems Science initiatives with other faculty across the university working in this area. As part of the cluster, they will also have opportunities to support curricular and pedagogical advances, advance interdisciplinary research initiatives, and cultivate global outreach initiatives in related areas.
