Position Summary:

Serving as a member of the dean’s senior management team, the Assistant Dean of Advancement (Assistant Dean) is a newly created role responsible for planning and implementing an integrated approach to the College of Engineering advancement program by overseeing development, alumni relations, and communications programs to maximize the support and exposure of the college. The Assistant Dean serves as chief development officer and manager of the college’s advancement program, with responsibility for securing private philanthropic support and producing targeted alumni and constituent engagement opportunities, as well as strategic communications that shape and extend the college’s brand while furthering stakeholder engagement, programmatic initiatives, or otherwise highlighting college priorities. Dually reporting to the College of Engineering dean and to the centrally-based associate vice president of development for colleges, the Assistant Dean oversees a staff of approximately 13.

The Assistant Dean will be a central figure in taking the College of Engineering to the next level of achievement and impact by coalescing strategic priorities with a robust advancement program. S/he is charged with ongoing enhancement of the college’s brand and alumni engagement efforts, and significantly growing fundraising revenues. Among the specific areas of focus and enhancement under the Assistant Dean’s leadership will be engaging academic colleagues within the college, especially department heads, as full partners in advancement activities, leveraging their expertise and relationships appropriately. The Assistant Dean will lead all campaign-related activities for the college, including the college’s participation in Virginia Tech’s next comprehensive campaign, and will be a central figure in all related college planning and strategy.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and experience or Master’s degree.

A minimum of seven to 10 years of experience in progressively responsible development leadership positions, which includes work in all functional areas (individual giving, institutional giving, planned giving, stewardship, alumni relations, board relations) and participation in a major capital campaign (planning, implementation, management, and successful conclusion), for an institution of higher education, nonprofit organization, or other environment of similar complexity with multiple stakeholders.

Demonstrated ability to provide management oversight, leadership, and direction with at least five years of significant supervisory experience, including experience creating and managing a budget. A strong record of recruiting and developing exceptional people and fostering a transparent work environment where collegiality is a key to success.

Particular strength in developing the case for support and strategic and complex fundraising plans, and executing against those plans to achieve goals and objectives. Experience working directly with the most senior levels of an organization is very important, as is the ability to effectively strategize and engage various groups and constituents. Demonstrated ability to translate concepts into multi-stakeholder initiatives.

Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to shape messaging in order to move individuals and institutions across the spectrum of prospect development, culminating in solicitations appropriate to organizational priorities and donors interests. Hands-on experience with six and seven-figure gifts and greater, including cultivation through solicitation and stewardship, as well as experience working with alumni and annual fund strategies for grooming the next generation of annual leadership and major gift donors.

Success in securing gifts from both defined and undefined constituencies.

Demonstrated ability in planning and executing strategic communications to complement advancement initiatives and achieve goals. Ability to understand and distill complex academic and scientific topics and projects for external audiences. Experience identifying and coaching project spokespeople. A functional understanding of how to effectively leverage various communication mediums and distribution channels for optimal exposure and impact.

Experience identifying, nurturing, and motivating volunteers, and an appreciation for their role in building an effective fundraising network.

Skill at goal setting and measuring success, and agility in addressing alternate program directions to meet goals when necessary.

Experience in developing, implementing, and monitoring strategic plans.

The ability to extract and analyze data to make effective, efficient decisions about donor strategy and process. A working knowledge of modern data management practices and techniques, including database information systems, data modeling, and analysis.

Familiarity with technology and other innovations that can streamline the development process and contribute to the integration of advancement functions.

Ability and willingness to travel domestically.

Preferred Qualifications:

An advanced degree and strong academic credentials that will be credible to donors and alumni are preferred.

Previous work experience in higher education, in a school of engineering, and/or in a hybrid centralized-decentralized fundraising model involving multiple units is preferred.

Regional and national travel required for the purposes of conducting field research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, which may include overnights and weekends. Must have the ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
Reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering and the Associate Vice President of Development for Colleges.
