Position Summary:

The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor in electrical engineering, specifically in power electronics converters and systems. The latter are envisioned to supersede the existing grid infrastructure in the future, utilizing high-power electronic energy routers in novel networks that could accommodate multiple types of energy sources, energy storage and loads, while operating in both AC and DC transmission and distribution modes. This approach is already being used in off-grid electronic power systems for transportation and information technology, where it its demonstrating its numerous advantages and inherent potential. Areas of interest include: power electronics converters for high-power grid applications, stability and dynamic interactions in electronic power systems, power electronics based integration of renewable energy sources and microgrids, and high-power density power converters using wide-bandgap power semiconductors.

The successful candidate is expected to be a significant contributor to the ongoing growth of the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES), and to develop ties with the Center for Power and Energy (CPE), and other centers and research groups within the department and the different colleges that compose the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities destination area at Virginia Tech. The Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area provides the successful candidate the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum, and/or outreach initiatives with other university faculty working in the area. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a strong, nationally-recognized funded-research program, a specialized graduate curriculum, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and participate in department, college, and university service and outreach activities, contributing vigorously towards the broader research and educational mission of the ECE Department. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum, and/or outreach initiatives with other university faculty working in the “Data and Decision Destination Area.”

Required Qualifications:

- An earned Ph.D. in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field, completed prior to employment
- Effective communication skills
- Demonstrated excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching, or evidence of high potential for such excellence
- Ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research and scholarship, and to identify potential funding sources to support such research
- Willingness and ability to work in a technology-based research and education environment, such as is characterized by use of learning technologies, distance learning, online courses, video-conferencing, and network and grid-based collaborative research
- Demonstrated experience leveraging the Data and Decision Destination Area expertise in broad, interdisciplinary teaching and/or research initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Prior experience in the role of PI or Co-PI on funded research projects
- Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines
- Experience in working with students as academic or career advisor, overseeing student internships, or service-learning activities
- Interest or experience in mentoring students, both undergraduate or graduate, in research
- Interest or experience in working effectively with a diverse student population
- Demonstrated experience leveraging the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area expertise in broad, interdisciplinary and/or research initiatives.
