Position Summary:

The university social media manager plays a key role in university communications to build and support Virginia Tech’s online reputation. A successful candidate will bring innovative, enterprising ideas to the social media team, stays abreast of emerging technologies, can demonstrate good professional judgment, and can work within university brand guidelines.

This person is responsible for social media content creation, comment moderation, and monitoring across multiple social media platforms on behalf of Virginia Tech. The social media manager should have demonstrated skills in writing for social media and the web, some photography/videography experience, ability to follow, implement, and evaluate social media trends, and the ability to enterprise ideas. This person needs to collaborate well with others in their unit and across the university and should also be able to work well independently.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or another related field

Strong communications skills

Demonstrated experience writing for social media and/or other digital platforms

Demonstrated understanding of audience-platform relationships and how that can affect messaging

Ability to maintain a level of confidentiality with sensitive situations

Ability to work within branding guidelines

Ability to work both in a team setting and independently

Ability to respond in a customer-service-type role to messages and inquiries in a timely manner

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience in higher education social media management with demonstrated achievements and progressive responsibilities

Photography and/or videography skills

Graphic design experience

Experience collecting and analyzing social metrics data

Marketing experience

Crisis communications experience

Capability of working at university-related events that may require physical stamina, including standing for extended periods of time as necessary

Experience using tools and apps like Hootsuite, Iconosquare, Buffer, Canva, etc., or similar tools

Familiarity with website content management systems

Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools

Occasional regional and national travel required for the purposes of creating original university social media content, which may include overnights and weekends. Must have the ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
