Position Summary:

The Student Program Coordinator serves as first contact for student-related questions and concerns regarding academic matters in the Department of Geosciences. The Coordinator serves as reference for faculty academic advisors in terms of academic programs, and changes in University policy, requirements, and transfer policies. In addition, the Coordinator processes all forms (electronic and paper) for the department’s graduate and undergraduate programs; manages department graduate student assistantship payroll database; manages all records for graduate and undergraduate students; prepares, maintains, and manages all materials related to curriculum including course proposals, management and teaching load reports; maintains academic statistical databases and prepares reports requiring related information; develops departmental public relations materials for recruiting students; attends undergraduate recruiting events such as open houses and fairs; coordinates and participates in departmental summer and fall orientation programs; assists in coordinating and recruiting for departmental semester abroad program; coordinates private-sector recruiter visits for internships and full-time hires; coordinates graduate student recruiting; and schedules departmental classrooms and the Derring Computer Laboratories.

Required Qualifications:

- Administrative and/or student support experience in an academic or professional office environment.
- Must have experience with software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Must be focused on serving students and committed to student success.
- Must be able to implement University academic policies and procedures.
- Must be able to compile, maintain and process statistical data for departmental records.
- Must be able to perform duties and make decisions while dealing with a high volume of interruption.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials and possess excellent communication and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Knowledge of Virginia Tech curriculum requirements for undergraduate and graduate students.
- Previous experience with Banner Student and faculty/advisor Hokie Spa webiste.
