Position Summary:

Chief Objective of Position:
The primary objective of this position is to support the hatchery manager with laboratory and research functions of the marine aquaculture program; with a primary focus on live feeds research and production at the VSAREC. The position is accountable for daily marine larviculture research and production, developing new live feeds production protocols, and helping to implement these at commercial sites. The position is further responsible for participation in the design, modification, and implementation of live feeds production protocols as related to ongoing research and training projects; as well as communicating and coordinating on a regular basis with PI’s and Co-PI’s. This position also requires good laboratory and analytical skills, as well as maintaining and development of written protocols, training people on these protocols, and writing progress reports.

Required Qualifications:

A B.S. degree in aquaculture or related field, as well as experience in live feeds production is required. Additional experience with larviculture is highly desirable. Additional experience in aquatic finfish research and/or training in aquaculture production, reproduction, and husbandry techniques in intensive recirculating aquaculture systems is desirable. Demonstrated experience in collecting data, analyzing data, and preparation of reports is highly desirable. Preparation, presenting, and/or publishing articles, scientific papers, or outreach materials is beneficial, as is demonstrated training of other individuals in the field of aquaculture. Applicant must be self-motivated, possess the ability to project from concept to implementation, and engage observational experience to implement changes as warranted to affect a healthful environment for research animals. Critical thinking and communication skills are imperative in the development of improved management and training techniques, and to synthesize and convey these scientific findings with other marine finfish research facilities, industry, and the public. The position further requires independent decision-making skills in the lab, and the ability to monitor and evaluate quality control parameters. In addition, the position will be responsible for orientation, training, and daily oversight of other technicians, trainees, graduate students and interns as needed.
