About Virginia Tech:

Virginia Tech is a public land-grant university, committed to teaching and learning, research, and outreach to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world. Building on its motto of Ut Prosim (that I may serve), Virginia Tech is dedicated to InclusiveVT—serving in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. We seek candidates who adopt and practice the Principles of Community, which are fundamental to our on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion, and to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Virginia Tech actively seeks a broad spectrum of candidates to join our community in preparing leaders for the world.

Position Summary:

An ever-growing regional and national reach is central to Virginia Tech’s aspirations to become a top one hundred globally ranked university. Virginia Tech is seeking an individual who is willing to make a transformative impact in expanding the university’s role in the greater Roanoke region (city and county). The executive director will have the opportunity to converge two organizational structures into one and serve as the lead administrator for the Virginia Tech Roanoke Center and the Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement. S/he will need to develop and articulate a strategic vision for the Roanoke Center broadly across Virginia Tech and the region. The executive director will continue the process of building an organizational culture and service ethos while promoting a culture of innovative programming, systematic improvement, and accountability. S/he must have the presence and diplomatic acumen to navigate the highest circles of regional government, industry, and the academy.
The executive director will lead the center’s effort to build cooperative relationships and create partnerships between community leaders and colleagues across the spectrum of Virginia Tech’s faculty and staff, to catalyze, facilitate, and support initiatives throughout the Roanoke region. The executive director is expected to actively engage in community-based organizations across the region, contribute productively to regional economic growth and development initiatives, and enhance the financial viability and capability of the Virginia Tech Roanoke Center and The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center. S/he serves as Virginia Tech’s Engagement units’ principal point of contact with the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institutes and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, including building a portfolio of engagement programs with a special focus in the fields of neuroscience, health sciences, and technology.
S/he is responsible for developing and delivering courses, seminars, workshops, certificate programs, donor sponsored technical assistance programs, association meetings and conferences, and other contract-specific credit and non-credit programs at the Virginia Tech Roanoke Center and The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center. These initiatives will be geared towards the regions’ industry, government, and educational institutions in the emergent destination areas and strategic growth areas (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html) of the university. The executive director will also oversee the expansion of innovative graduate programs at the Virginia Tech Roanoke Center and ongoing operations related to the delivery of all graduate degree programs.
The executive director will be expected to possess a thorough understanding of resource allocation, and to align resources with strategic goals of the center. The executive director will be responsible for generating program revenues and meeting annual revenue targets through the development of a robust, diverse program portfolio that meets the needs of the region. Virginia Tech seeks a seasoned, dynamic leader who is able to capitalize on the remarkable possibilities ahead for the region in the following sectors: manufacturing, utilities, healthcare, local government, and finance.
