Position Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Operations for Human Resources, the Senior Manager of Communications plans, executes, and evaluates a comprehensive communications program and marketing strategy for the Division of Human Resources and aligns those activities with university-wide communications, marketing, and branding initiatives. The Senior Manager designs communications to enhance communication with university employees; enhance awareness of employment issues, benefits, and opportunities; and promote a positive work-life culture at Virginia Tech. Collaborate closely with University Relations, especially in working with Virginia Tech News, concerning communication projects that articulate Virginia Tech as an employer of choice.

The Senior Manager provides leadership and oversight for division websites, social media efforts, and print publications, including producing all content related to Human Resources. He or she also collaborates with the Virginia Tech News Team (VT News) to ensure divisional communications to key audiences are appropriate, timely, and supportive of the university’s mission and vision.

The Senior Manager has a critical role in assisting with the HR Transformation Initiative and developing a strategic communication plan to support the transformation.

The Senior Manager ensures that all materials produced within the division meet standards for quality, accuracy, and timeliness and are consistent with university brand, editorial, and graphic design standards.

The Senior Manager serves as the divisional spokesperson, as assigned, for routine media inquiries.

The Senior Manager may represent the division before university employees, professional organizations, and other important university audiences.

Required Qualifications:

-A Master’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field or a Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field with training and or experience which equates to an advanced degree.
-The successful candidate will have a strong record of progressive experience in today’s communications fields, which includes evidence of strong writing, editing and presentation competences;
-Working knowledge and understanding of effective graphic design and branding principles, and the use of the Internet as a medium of communication.
-Must be proficient using programs and tools such as word processing, image processing, content management system, and social media;
-Must have the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
-Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
-Demonstrated commitment to the Virginia Tech Principles of Community.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Experience working in a multicultural environment;
-Experience working in higher education or human resources;
-Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) certification.
-Demonstrated experience leading people, either as a supervisor, a colleague collaborating with others, or both.
-Experience with communications governance;
-Experience with website implementation/redesign;
-Experience as a photographer or with the effective selection and use of photography to complement messaging strategies.
-Experience working with a variety of creative communications, data analytics, e-mail management, and web content management software platforms.
