Position Summary:

The Administrative Assistant position provides support services to the daily office operations for the TRiO Upward Bound and Talent Search programs at Virginia Polytechnic and State University. This includes general office management as well as fiscal responsibilities. This position is federally funded through the Department of Education, and funded through both the Upward Bound and Talent Search programs. The majority of the Administrative Assistant’s time will be spent working for Upward Bound, and the rest will be spent working for Talent Search.

Required Qualifications:

-Associate’s degree in Business, English or related field and/or equivalent training or experience
-Previous experience providing program or administrative support
-Ability to design and manage various kinds of paper or electronic filing systems
-The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, self-motivated, and well-organized with strong attention to detail
-Demonstrated writing, typing, and proofreading skills
-Sensitivity to diverse ethnic groups

Preferred Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s degree in Business, English or a related field
-Experience working with students from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds
-Advanced computer skills including database experience, spreadsheet/budget experience, and experience with office management software such as Microsoft Office Suite, WordPress, and Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign
-Experience working with confidential student information
-Experience working with TRiO programs and/or other state/federal education grant programs
-University experience with accounting and HR systems
