Position Summary:

Provide technical support in the production of fruits and vegetables for the educational farm-to-campus program at the Dining Services Farm at Kentland Farm, the Urban Horticulture Center, and other Dining Services facilities. This position works closely with the Dining Services Farm Manager. Responsibilities include: (1) operating tractors and tractor-drawn implements for soil tillage, crop planting, cultivation, mowing, and materials handling; (2) Assist in the supervision of Dining Services employees and students in the implementation, monitoring, and recording keeping for Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) food safety and USDA Organic production and handling standards; (3) Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of facilities, including cleaning, tool organization and storage, mowing, and weed-whacking; (4) Assist as needed in daily farm operations, including planting, weeding, harvesting, and post-harvest washing, packing, and delivery of vegetables.

Required Qualifications:

Previous experience working on a farm or other agricultural enterprise.
Previous experience operating tractors and tractor-drawn implements and demonstrated knowledge of tractor safety.
Willingness to attend Virginia Tech Environmental Health and Safety trainings pertaining to farm safety, including but not limited to tractor safety, power tool safety, and ladder safety.
Ability to work with little or no supervision.
Ability to work in a strenuous outdoor setting in adverse weather conditions.
Strong organizational skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including phone, email, and record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience working with horticultural crops, including vegetables, fruit, herbs, flowers, and ornamentals.
Previous experience supervising multiple individuals simultaneously.
Previous experience or interest in organic and sustainable farming practices.
Previous experience with beekeeping.
Previous experience with hydroponic gardening.
