Position Summary:

The Extension Educator will foster a collaborative partnership between Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Pamunkey Indian Tribe. The Pamunkey Indian Reservation is located on the Pamunkey River in King William County, on the Middle Peninsula of Virginia. These partners will work together to facilitate discussion and discovery of community needs as it relates to the future of the Pamunkey Indian Reservation. Specifically, the project will execute a plan of work that will address three major goals selected by the Pamunkey Tribe. Those goals are:

Goal 1) Sustainable and Culturally Adapted Land Management.

Goal 2) Agribusiness Opportunity Development.

Goal 3) Tribal Culture Educational Outreach

Major responsibilities will include: working closely with Tribal Council and community leaders, and appropriate agents and specialists to identify and prioritize issues, problems and opportunities; Use farm and community visits as a means to become knowledgeable of specific Tribal needs and problems related to agricultural production, marketing, Tribal culture, and environmental protection; cooperate with other county, State and Federal agencies, and other organizations as needed to strengthen or extend grant-funded programs; foster communication among Tribal members, marketers, processors and consumers; identify potential Tribal leaders and help develop their capacity to accomplish Tribal goals; maintain a high level of proficiency in subject matter field by participating in in-service training and professional activities; creative and effective communications to inform Tribal members about current agriculture and natural resource practices and educational opportunities; provide current research-based information to Tribal members by employing various delivery methods; meetings/workshops, short courses, field days, tours, on-farm research, demonstrations, and other appropriate teaching methods; utilize electronic mail, the Internet and other advancing technology to serve the needs of Tribal members and to communicate with Extension staff and others. With the Tribe, seek out and write specialized grant proposals to develop and enhance Extension education programming to meet Tribal needs; cooperate with public and private organizations and individuals that share Extension’s mission and objectives; coordinate plans of work with other agents and offices in the multi-county area. Administratively responsible to the District Director; programming will be conducted in compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action/Civil Rights policies and procedures; develop and implement evaluation plans, report impacts, outcomes, and results of programs to Tribal Council and members, the public, and VCE administration.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline from an accredited college or university. Bachelor’s degree in appropriate discipline, with extensive applicable experience, will be considered. Demonstrated ability to lead groups, plan, implement, facilitate, teach and evaluate educational information programs. Knowledge and use of computer technology in educational programming and management. Effective communication and presentation skills. Expertise in working effectively with traditionally underserved audiences. Ability to work with minimal supervision in an unstructured setting. Maintain a personal commitment to working with diverse clientele and colleagues, and a willingness to further the civil rights goals of Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree is preferred, with at least one degree in a discipline related to subject matter specialty area. Commercial agriculture experience is also preferred.
