Position Summary:

This position provides an opportunity for biofuel sorghum research and extension education with the Virginia Tech’s Tidewater Agricultural Research and Experiment station. The main responsibility is leading the field work, data collection and management, and publication of reports and peer-reviewed publications on sorghum variety assessment for agronomic and physiological traits such as water use efficiency, and optimization of agronomic practices for biofuel biomass production including nitrogen use and seeding rate. Direct and remote measurements of crop performance can be done traditionally and using unmanned aerial platforms. Writing grant proposals and presenting research results at professional meetings are expected. The position requires weekly travel to the testing sites in southeastern Virginia, constant communication with collaborators in North Carolina and South Carolina, and occasional travels to meeting in these states. The position requires a solid understanding of agronomic principles for high production of biomass, accuracy with data collection, and work well with others in a team.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree in agronomy, physiology, or related disciplines; ability to independently design (statistically) an experiment, execute field research (from planting to post-harvest), and analyze and interpret the results (linear and non-linear models in SAS, JMP, Systat, etc.) documented by the record of publications; ability to give and follow orders; communicate effectively in English (in oral and writing); good organizational skills; must have a valid driving license and record

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience with bioenergy sorghum or remote sensing research or both; good record of peer-review publications and presentations at professional meetings; ability to write research proposals.
