Position Summary:

This position reports to the CALS Executive Director, Business Operations and Strategic Initiatives and collaborates with department heads to provide leadership, consultation and responsibility for the financial and strategic operations of the departments of Plant Pathology, Physiology and Weed Science, Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences, Horticulture, (these three departments soon to form the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences), and Entomology.

The position will be responsible for the following:
• In collaboration with department heads, responsible for management, consultation and strategic application of all financial resources including salary budgets, operating and overhead funds, sponsored funding, VT Foundation accounts, payroll transactions, graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships.
• Assist in process redesign and streamlining to help departments maximize resources.
• Ensure compliance with Virginia Tech, College, and departmental policies and procedures related to finance and operations
• Provides long and short range strategic resource planning for departments including Partnership Incentive Based Budgeting forecasts and development of best practices.

Required Qualifications:

Advanced degree in business, finance, management, accounting, public administration or equivalent level of training and/or experience.
Experience with financial/budget preparation and analysis;
Experience compiling and analyzing fiscal data;
Ability to exercise judgment, make decisions, set priorities, interpret policies and procedures, work independently and communicate effectively;
Ability to organize, perform, and manage both financial and human resource related information.
Must be able to establish and maintain a positive image for the departments and the college

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree in business or public administration,
Grants management experience,
Financial and/or Human Resources experience in a higher education setting,
Demonstrated knowledge of finance/HR systems and databases,
Demonstrated capacity for use of technology, including significant software skills.
