Position Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director for Utilities, the Utilities Distribution Manager in the Virginia Tech Facilities Department – Mechanical Utilities unit manages all activities relating to the central distribution of steam, chilled water, potable water, sewer and compressed air. This position is responsible for routine administrative functions, assistance with budgeting, and the safe operation of the aforementioned utilities. Oversees human resource concerns for assigned employees, develops a collaborative relationship with other units within Facilities, and ensures reliable operation of utilities through routine maintenance, emergency maintenance, and other preventative maintenance. Works to develop a positive relationship with campus customers, and provides leadership to employees within unit. This position is considered a working manager with extensive time spent out of the office and working in the field.

Required Qualifications:

- Extensive knowledge and work experience in utility distribution procedures and repair.
- Journeyman level experience in pipe-fitting or steamfitting.
- Sufficient background in welding to discharge duties.
- Supervisory experience at the minimum of first line supervision for a crew, such as hiring, evaluation, scheduling, and dealing with routine disciplinary matters.
- Sufficient experience to prepare informal estimates for need activities and repairs.
- Experience should demonstrate a broad knowledge of utility distribution and repair.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work within established contracts to obtain estimates and retain contract crews for utility distribution repairs when jobs so require.
- The incumbent must demonstrate a commitment to excellent service delivery to customers, administrators, colleagues, employees, students, and other constituent groups.
- Ability to work effectively to achieve unit goals with minimal supervision and administrative support.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe.
- Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL).
