Position Summary:

Postdoctoral or Research Scientist Position- Rank will be dependent on level of experience.
Applicants are invited for a research faculty position to work on imperiled amphibians and reptiles in the Florida panhandle with Professor Carola Haas in Fish & Wildlife Conservation at Virginia Tech. Part of the work will involve collaborating with partners at USGS, USFWS, and other universities on a flatwoods salamander breeding phenology project funded by SERDP. Other work will focus on monitoring and managing reticulated flatwoods salamanders, Florida bog frog, and gopher tortoise populations and habitat on Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field. We are seeking candidates with expertise in two or more of the following areas and a willingness and ability to learn all of them: hydrological monitoring using pressure-transducer loggers, installing and using automated PIT tag systems, population modeling, database management using Access and R, geo-spatial modeling (GIS), studying animal movement, and using forecasted climate data and interacting with climate modelers. Incumbent would be expected to publish and would have broad opportunities based on the multiple long-term (5-20 year) datasets that are part of this project. In addition, incumbent would have opportunities to participate in grant-writing, staff supervision, and project management. Position could be based either in Blacksburg, VA or in Niceville, Florida, but extended travel (1-2 weeks at a time) between the two locations several times per year will be required. Applicants with less than 4 experience post-Ph.D. should apply for the postdoctoral position and those with 4 or more years experience post-Ph.D. who are able and willing to support some of their salary through additional grant-writing should apply for the Research Scientist Position. Start date in September 2017 preferred, but starting in January 2018 is also possible. Ideally, the incumbent would continue on these projects for 2-4 years, although shorter and longer terms are possible.
Postdoctoral Associate Responsibilities to include:
This position will conduct and supervise research on and management of wildlife populations, focusing on imperiled amphibians and reptiles in the Florida panhandle.
Participate in research and management of reptiles and amphibians and their habitats on Eglin Air Force Base, including the following subtasks. Supervise survey and monitoring program for flatwoods salamander, Florida bog frog, and gopher tortoise. Supervise hydrological monitoring program.
Coordinate with other project personnel and with external collaborators on a large study of ambystomatid salamander breeding phenology including use of forecasted climate data. Design, execute, and interpret research and adaptive management plans, in concert with team.
Conduct training and coordinate field research activities of staff and of undergraduate and graduate students.
Coordinate hiring of seasonal field technicians.
Train and supervise seasonal technicians.
Engage in collaborative work with Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, USGS, and other partners to achieve research objectives. Prepare professional presentations, professional reports, and publications.

In addition if the candidate is hired as a Research Scientist Serve as PI on proposals to expand research and management program by initiating new programs and collaborating with off-campus partners.
Take primary responsibility for leading the design, execution, and interpretation of research on these new projects to test management and monitoring approaches for wildlife [including hiring, training, and supervision of employees.
Coordinate activities with regulatory agencies and obtain and maintain appropriate permits.

Required Qualifications:

Post doc requirements: Ph.D. in wildlife science, ecology, or related field. Experience designing and publishing results of field research. Experience managing field projects, supervising and training employees and students.

Research Scientist requirements: Ph.D. in wildlife science, ecology, or related field and at least 4 years of Postdoctoral experience. Experience designing and publishing results of field research. Experience managing field projects, supervising and training employees and students. Experience obtaining grants.

Preferred Qualifications:

Research experience with hydrological monitoring, herpetofauna, and/or longleaf pine or other fire-maintained ecosystems. Experience managing large data sets. Experience partnering with state or federal agencies to achieve management and research goals. Experience with federal regulatory process regarding management of threatened and endangered species.
