Position Summary:

The Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise (HNFE) (http://hnfe.vt.edu) invites applications for an Assistant Director for the Master of Science (MS) degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. This 9-month (AY), non-tenure-track faculty appointment has teaching and administrative responsibilities at the Instructor level. The Assistant Director will coordinate the newly developed MS degree program in Nutrition and Dietetics. The 17-month, non-thesis MS degree program emphasizes Nutrition Counseling and Behavior Change. We are seeking an outstanding individual with professional experience in dietetics education and in nutrition counseling, clinical dietetics, food service management, and community or public health nutrition. We are interested in applicants who have excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills, who can operate in the rapidly changing dietetics work environment, and who understands the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) education standards.

The candidate will manage the daily operations of the MS degree in Nutrition and Dietetics program. Scope of activities include: instruct graduate dietetics courses (50% administration and 50% teaching); promote the program to potential applicants in conjunction with the Virginia Tech Graduate School; interact with diverse audiences such as current and prospective students, internship preceptors, HNFE faculty and staff; provide training to practice sites; promote compliance with facility requirements; serve on the HNFE Dietetics Committee; coordinate with the Director of the Virginia Tech Exemplary Program award-winning undergraduate Dietetics Program accredited by ACEND; collaborate with departmental faculty teaching program courses; supervise program graduate students; and participate in professional service activities.

Additional responsibilities include: scheduling internship placements for students; assisting the program director with student orientation; mentoring, advising, and monitoring the progress of the dietetic interns; assisting students to develop and submit their Plans of Study for the M.S. degree; actively recruit new students; coordinating and managing program applications, application review and graduate student selection; supervising program staff; maintaining policies, affiliation agreements and contracts; gathering, summarizing and evaluating program accomplishments and outcomes; and preparing documents for continued ACEND program accreditation.

The candidate is expected to:
• Serve as the Assistant Director of the MS in Nutrition and Dietetics that includes supervising other program staff, tracking and evaluating the program, and developing documentation for maintaining ACEND accreditation;
• Teach required graduate courses in the 51-credit MS in Nutrition and Dietetics program;
• Advise and supervise MS program students;
• Serve as a liaison to program preceptors, Virginia Tech’s Carilion Clinic Nutrition Services staff, and to the community;
• Participate in professional service activities.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of a Master’s degree in nutrition or a closely related field;
• RD/RDN credential with experience in dietetics education, and in nutrition counseling.
• At least two years of teaching experience;
• Experience in clinical dietetics, food service management, and/or community nutrition;
• Active Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics;
• Familiarity with an ACEND-accredited dietetic education program and general accreditation requirements;
• Excellent leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills;
• Effective written and verbal communication skills;
• Commitment to quality student education.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience teaching at the graduate level;
• Administrative experience with an ACEND-accredited program;
• Prior administrative and management experience;
• Advanced practice experience in nutrition counseling, weight management, and/or sports nutrition.
• Experience with online course design and delivery.
