Position Summary:

The Assistant Director (AD) for the Intercultural Engagement Center serves within Cultural and Community Centers (CCC) in the Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech. The AD is an intentional leader in the work of advising, advocacy, and awareness building of Virginia Tech students and communities. The primary charge of the AD is to cultivate the conditions that support engagement in the Division of Student Affairs Aspirations for Student Learning. As such, the AD must be dedicated to creating a community that commits to unwavering curiosity, pursues self-understanding and integrity, practices civility, prepare for a life of courageous leadership, and embraces the University’s motto “Ut Prosim” as a way of life.

The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting Virginia Tech to nurture and sustain a supportive and welcoming environment for all members of its community as outlined in the Virginia Tech Principles of Community. They will support the goals of InclusiveVT and the Office of Inclusion & Diversity. Specifically, the AD provides oversight in the development and delivery of programs and services with the purpose of increasing cultural awareness, cultural competence, and community development as a means to enrich the quality of campus life. They are responsible for multiple curricular initiatives designed to support dialogue and understanding among people of different backgrounds. In addition, the AD provides advising guidance and support to the Jewish Student Union and the Muslim Student Union.

Position Reports to: Senior Director for Cultural and Community Centers (formerly director of intercultural engagement center)

Required Qualifications:

a. Master’s degree and demonstrated progressive experience.
b. Demonstrated experience in project management and/or program planning.
c. Exceptional communication skills.
d. Experience advising religious based student organizations in higher education.
e. Personal commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
f. Demonstrated knowledge and experience cultivating and sustaining relationships with historically underrepresented and underserved communities

Preferred Qualifications:

a. Experience creating learning environments and opportunities for diverse student populations.
b. Proven competency in facilitating group dialogue.
c. Experience in conducting assessments and reporting findings.
d. Previous work in advocacy of individuals or groups.
e. Commitment to remain current on issues directly affecting Jewish and Muslim community concerns and civil rights.
