Position Summary:

The Business Operations Manager provides direct support to the core programs and personnel of the Apex Systems Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Apex CIE) under the direction of the Apex CIE Director. Primary job duties include overseeing the Centers operational affairs, which includes responsibility for the successful execution of Apex CIE’s marketing, communications, programs and events. Duties include, but are not limited to program and event budgeting, program and event marketing; managing the time-line and scope of services for each program or event, negotiating facility agreements and contracts, assessment of program needs and post-event and post-program reporting. The Business Operations Manager is also facilitating the efficient day-to-day business operations of the Center and ensuring a high level of customer service to all Apex CIE stakeholders.

The Business Operations Manager also serves as the centers fiscal coordinator with responsibility for the centralized budgets of the Center. The Business Operations Manager manages purchasing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable, and process all travel authorizations and reimbursements for center staff. Additional responsibilities include support for human resource transactions for center employees, including but not limited to those related to hiring, onboarding, compensation, leave and required university training.

Occasional travel required to provide on-site local and out-of-town program support. Occasional weekend, early morning, and late evening work required based on program schedules.

Required Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related business field, and/or extensive experience directly related to financial management and reporting.
- Significant experience in university or corporate business operations and management.
- Significant experience and knowledge of advanced accounting principles and practices.
- Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and ability to learn other software as needed.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare financial analyses, financial worksheets, and business correspondence timely and accurately.
- Demonstrated effectiveness supervising employees and contractors.
- Must be able to work collaboratively and effectively with others in a diverse environment.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to understand and apply policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy, and ability to exercise judgment in dealing with confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience with financial, student, and personnel managements systems and procedures specific to Virginia Tech, such as Banner and VTF Banner (finance and HR), HokieMart, Timeclock Plus, TEM, Depart, leave system, CashNet, Online I-9 system, Micro-strategies and PeopleAdmin.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the preparation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of budgets.
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
