Position Summary:

A postdoctoral associate position is available in the research group of Dr. Amanda Morris in the Chemistry Department at Virginia Tech. The position is available beginning July 1, 2017. Candidates will be required to hold a Ph.D. in chemistry or adequately related field. Work will be on photoelectrochemical assemblies for the oxidation of water and reduction of carbon dioxide. It will especially center on the application of time-resolved laser Raman spectroscopy, transient absorption spectroscopy, and spectroelectrochemical IR spectroscopy to identify key catalyst-substrate interactions and quantify electron transfer rate constants.

Responsibilities Include:
-Work on photoelectrochemical assemblies for the oxidation
of water and reduction of carbon dioxide.
-Apply time-resolved laser Raman spectroscopy, transient
absorption spectroscopy, and spectroelectrochemical IR
spectroscopy to identify key catalyst-substrate interactions
and quantify electron transfer rate constants.
-Prepare regular written progress reports.
-Submit manuscripts based on work to peer reviewed
journals and present results at national conferences.
-Work with faculty supervisor and graduate students.
-Take the initiative in finding solutions to scientific problems
that arise on a day-to-day research.
-Pursue research goals with routine consultation, but limited
-Supervise/train undergraduate or graduate students in
laboratory procedures.
-Assist in project design, execution, and interpretation of
research projects to gain practical experience in the field.
-Prepare professional presentations, professional reports,
and publications.
-Engage in collaborative work with peers to achieve research

Required Qualifications:

-Recent doctoral degree in chemistry or appropriate related field, completed by the time of appointment.
-Experience in laser spectroscopy and organometallic synthesis.
-Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as with a research group.
-Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Strong background in physical chemistry.
-Evidence of good project management.
-Evidence of developing publications based on research.
-Ability to work under limited supervision.
-Creativity, independence and high motivation.
-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel in the organization.
