Position Summary:

Position Summary: Provides management and leadership to the Fitness Programs, which include group exercise, personal training & fitness testing, small group training, instructional dance, strength & conditioning, instructional gymnastics, and assigned special events. Supervises all fitness programming staff, which includes 1 full-time staff, 1 graduate assistant and over 150 student part-time student and wage staff. Leads fitness initiatives and collaborations across the department and campus including but not limited to Sport Clubs, Venture Out, Facilities, and the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. This position serves as an advocate for fitness and wellness within the university community and the continual pursuit of Building Healthy Hokies. Position is an integral part of the department leadership team, collaborating with fellow Assistant Directors and senior leadership to advance student development and recreational programming while adhering to departmental core values.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in Exercise Science or Physiology, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Health Promotion/Public Health, Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Higher Education, or related field. Progressive experience in fitness/recreation/wellness leadership in collegiate or commercial/private recreation. Previous graduate assistant experience also considered. Demonstrated experience in the successful implementation and evaluation of high quality fitness programs. Demonstrated experience in supervising, leading, and evaluating fitness program staff. Demonstrated experience in preparing and managing budgets, assessment plans, and risk management. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and develop effective partnerships. Commitment to continuing education. Excellent communication skills and ability to deliver presentations and speak publicly. NCCA accredited Personal Training AND Group Fitness Certifications. (ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA). At least one specialty certification (Les Mills, USAW, CSCS, RYT, ACE Specialty Certificate). CPR/AED and First Aid certifications (American Red Cross or American Heart Association)

Preferred Qualifications:

Recognized experience at the collegiate level in the development, administration, and evaluation of fitness programs. Demonstrated experience in the advancement of diversity and inclusive programming. CPR/AED and First Aid Instructor’s certification. Two or more specialty certifications (Les Mills, USAW, CSCS, RYT, ACE Specialty Certificate). Previous experience instructing for-credit, academic courses related to exercise leadership and/or physical activity. Knowledge and ability to effectively use technology systems that support fitness program management and sales.
