Position Summary:

The VTC Research Institute and the VTC School of Medicine represent a successful public-private partnership between the Commonwealth of Virginia’s leading research-intensive university – Virginia Tech – and a major health care system – Carilion Clinic, in Roanoke, VA. The research institute is located in the picturesque Roanoke Valley midway between Washington DC and Charlotte, NC. The VTCRI currently houses 25 independent research groups with over 250 research and support team members and over $70M in current active extramural research funding.

Research conducted at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (VTCRI) creates a bridge between basic science research at Virginia Tech and clinical expertise at Carilion Clinic and increases translational research opportunities for both partners. Research conducted by scientists at the institute is aimed at understanding the molecular basis for health and disease, and development of diagnostic tools, treatments, and therapies that will contribute to the prevention and solution of existing and emerging problems in contemporary medicine. Research areas of emphasis which presently align with areas of strength and active research at Virginia Tech include inflammation, infectious disease, neuroscience, and cardiovascular science and cardiology.

Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute is seeking a Senior System Engineer. The incumbent will be part of an IT team whose chief objective is to ensure continuous and secure operations of VTCRI’s network, systems and delivered services. Will take the lead in implementation of services, data integrity, recoverability and security of the environment. This will include actively participating in day-to-day monitoring and administration tasks. The incumbent will have ownership and/or participation in various projects as assigned, and the adherence to established equipment inventory and surplus procedures.

Focuses in particular on industry established best-practices and standards to make administration more effective and more efficient. Will be responsible for all facets of System engineering – design, documentation, implementation, capacity planning, monitoring, troubleshooting, enforcing standards. Incumbent will support enterprise applications in a scientific research environment. The incumbent will manage IT policies and procedures in collaboration with the IT Director.

The position provides technical leadership for systems and network security by developing innovative and creative solutions to complex challenges with the goal of advancing the field of data ingestion, storage, retrieval, transformation and analysis in support of biomedical research. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

- Master’s degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.
- Expert knowledge in server end SAN/NAS configuration and troubleshooting
- Expert in Linux server systems administration (RHEL, CentOS, Oracle, Ubuntu or Scientific Linux 5/6/7)
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Server products including Active Directory
- Experience developing and deploying software engineering and automation solutions for an enterprise Linux infrastructure using a variety of tools (e.g., Puppet, Chef, Git, Jenkins, and Foreman)
- Knowledge of virtualization concepts and tools (VMware experience preferred)
- Knowledge of open source projects and community
- Expereince providing technical guidance in software engineering techniques and automated support tools
- Knowledge of systems security, backup and recovery procedures, performance tuning, and networking.
- Excellent documentation, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Evidence of creativity, independence, and high motivation.
- Ability to identify highly complex problems, investigate them, address them, and learn from them.
- Experience performing technical evaluations, analysis and troubleshooting for all supported servers in response to help desk tickets including, server failures, full systems outages and troubleshooting
- Solid networking knowledge including IP tables
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of training users in applications and operating system fundamentals and writing basic documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience with VERITAS NetBackup Enterprise backup software
- Knowledge of underlying protocols of Active Directory and SSO components, including LDAP, Kerberos
- Knowledge of HIPAA rules and regulations
- Knowledge of database platforms (MySQL and PostgreSQL) in a scientific research environment.
- Knowledge of embedded system (i.LON LonWorks)
- Knowledge of building management systems (APC ISX,
