Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Principal Gifts, the Principal Gifts Officer is a senior development officer assigned to the highest level development prospects for Virginia Tech. The individual will serve as a visible frontline fundraiser and manage a portfolio of 30-35 principal gifts prospects, who are defined as having the capacity to give $5 million or more within the next five years. This position is concerned with strategy development as well as staff support, planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives for the individuals assigned to this prospect pool. This position’s primary focus is identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high-level prospects who have the capacity to make transformative gifts to Virginia Tech. The Principal Gifts Officer will work closely with the Vice President for Advancement, the Associate Vice President for Principal Gifts, the President, the Deans and with other key academic leaders to set short- and long-term donor-centric strategies and develop initiatives to advance each prospect’s meaningful connection to the university so as to set the stage for solicitation in accordance with the university’s priorities.
Bachelor’s degree and fundraising experience or Master’s degree.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to think strategically about moving individuals across the spectrum of prospect development, culminating in significant solicitations appropriate to the donor as well as institutional priorities.
Candidates must demonstrate a broad knowledge of fund-raising concepts and administrative experience, preferably in an academic setting.
Must demonstrate a proven record of working with high-level prospects who have the capacity to make transformative gifts.
Demonstrated excellent communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to organize, motivate and work with volunteers.
Willingness to travel nationally and sometimes internationally for the purpose of conducting field research, cultivation, and solicitation prospects.
Experience working with high capacity donors in a university setting.
Knowledge of practical fundraising experience in developing cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for significant donors and prospects.
Demonstrated experience in working effectively with senior administrators, faculty, staff, institutional boards, volunteers, and/or donors.
Demonstrated familiarity with financial planning, tax and charitable gift laws and planned giving vehicles and methods.
Preference for proven success in building productive, long-term relationships with senior administrators, key business leaders, faculty, staff, institutional boards, volunteers, and/or donors.

This position requires extensive regional and national travel and work hours that include evenings, weekend and overnight travel for the purpose of conducting field research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
Reports to the Associate Vice President for Principal Gifts who reports to the Vice President for Advancement.
