Position Summary:

The Biocomplexity Institute (BI) of Virginia Tech integrates information biology with the study of massively interacting systems to answer pressing challenges to human health, habitat and well-being. Founded in 2000, the Biocomplexity Institute’s research extends from the mathematics of genomic sequencing to the dynamics of social policy. Located on the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus with research offices at Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington, Virginia, the institute serves strategic partners and sponsors in science, governance, and business.

The institute is searching for someone to work as a member of the Project Management team. The Publication Specialist will report to the Operations Project Coordinator. Primary responsibilities include administering and coordinating publication activities for the Biocomplexity Institute faculty. This includes working directly with faculty and other Institute staff to ensure University systems reflect all current and past publication, professional and teaching activities. The position will also be responsible for research life cycle data entry into Institute systems including proposal, award and publication information. The Publication Specialist will understand the key metrics for performance evaluation used by the University and confirm that the Institute’s accomplishments are correctly represented in the University data sources of record. The Publication Specialist will help faculty generate annual activity reports and respond to BI management requests for other reporting needs. The Publication Specialist will work with other Project Management team members in support of other institute goals and projects.

In accordance with university policy for all non-student positions, this position will require a conviction check.

Required Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience with a scholarly publication process and the types of work generated by research faculty members;
• Proficiency with computer applications such as Word, Excel, content management systems;
• Experience interacting with faculty at all levels, while producing desired outcomes;
• Experience performing accurate data entry into systems;
• Ability to prioritize and manage large volumes of work to anticipate and meet deadlines while maintaining attention to detail;
• Ability to use independent judgment and decision making;
• Ability to work independently, but within a team environment;
• Strong commitment to customer service; excellent communication and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or a related field;
• Experience using commercial publication systems like Elements and the ability to learn new systems;
• Knowledge of project management processes and desire to be a part of project management team;
• Experience editing proposals, scientific peer-reviewed papers, theses and book chapters;
• Familiarity with the research life cycle from proposal submission to project closeout;
• Experience in an academic research environment
