Position Summary:

Director, Continuing & Professional Education
Reporting to the associate vice president for Engagement, the director leads a dynamic unit of faculty and staff that deliver a portfolio of programs that extend the assets of the university (e.g., short courses, workshops, conferences, & technical assistance programs) for delivery in person or through distance education. The director:
•Leads a dynamic, revenue-generating unit
•Leads the planning and implementation of conferences and professional education programs
•Develops operational strategies for the long-term effectiveness and impact of the CPE unit
•Oversees and manages client relationships
•Provides leadership for CPE program faculty including the development and implementation of program portfolios
•Directs and manages work activities of CPE team leaders, program services manager, enrollment information systems manager, creative services manager and corresponding personnel
•Works collaboratively with program planning/delivery team leaders, Commonwealth Campus Center directors, Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement faculty, and other Engagement unit leaders to provide high-quality program support services
•Develops and administers the CPE unit budget, business, and communication plans
•Develops CPE unit financial forecasts and establishes team and organizational revenue goals
•Ensures the effective administration of continuing education units (CEUs), CPE units or equivalent through oversight and enhancement of administrative and organizational structures and processes
•Coordinates closely with Engagement Finance personnel to ensure maximum internal financial controls are employed
•Conducts annual review of CPE rate schedule
•Oversees program evaluation processes and impact assessments
•Works collaboratively with internal and external colleagues to ensure short- and long-term business operations and solutions are met
•Maintains alliances with university academic and administrative units
•Develops and maintains strong lines of communications between CPE, Strategic Partnerships and Program Development, Commonwealth Campus Centers, and other units in Outreach and International Affairs
•Ensures that reports required from the department are submitted promptly and accurately, procedures are revised for the effective delivery of programs, and that CPE is in full compliance with SACS accreditation stands, state and federal regulations, and university policies and procedures
•Maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish goals and objectives
•Contributes to the field of engagement through research, publications, and presentations
•Coordinates programming efforts with leaders of university facilities (e.g., Inn at Virginia Tech & Skelton Conference Center, The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, Executive Briefing Center, Commonwealth Campus Centers)
•Works closely with the Director of Strategic Partnerships and Program Development to design diverse, revenue generating programs and projects through instruction, research and technical assistance •Promotes the value of CPE services to internal and external stakeholder communities
The Director will lead the regular review and revision of processes related to export control, PCI compliance, criminal background checks, and funds handling. This position is responsible for the successful operation of internal database systems.
The Director is responsible for building team cohesion and program accountability, fosters relationships between work groups, facilitates unit revenue achievement, and focuses on quality improvement.
Works with CPE team leaders, engagement unit directors, and administrative support personnel to identify and implement changes in operating models directed at improving customer service, efficiency, and timeliness of program delivery.

Required Qualifications:

•Master’s degree and significant experience in education program development, planning, implementation, and administration
•Demonstrated record of leadership, supervision, program support operations, program delivery, and revenue generation
•Excellent organizational and planning skills
•Experience managing a comprehensive program portfolio, and in the oversight of administrative functions within higher education
•Demonstrated ability to establish close linkages with the academic community and keen understanding of the culture of higher education
•Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of audiences and to create and maintain collaborative relationships
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

•Doctoral degree
•Experience in fiscal and human resource management with a proven commitment to diversity and equal opportunity
•Experience managing operations, information systems, and program implementation in a Continuing and Professional Education unit
