We are looking for wage personnel at Virginia Tech’s AHS Jr. Agricultural Research and Extension Center, located in Winchester, Virginia. This position is a field and lab assistant for the horticulture program. The successful candidate is expected to carryout experiments in orchard and lab settings; maintain experimental blocks in terms of planting, pruning, spraying, thinning, and harvesting; collect and record research information; and report research results to the principle investigator (s). Majority of work during the winter will be lab-based and that of the spring to summer will be field-based. Both lab and field work requires handling of equipment and chemicals.
Ability to comprehend and execute written and verbal instructions without error; ability to accurately count and legibly record and accurately encode data; ability to work in a team environment; experience in horticultural or biological research setting.
Bachelor’s degree in science or related field, or equivalent experience; experience in a scientific lab or an orchard; demonstrated computer skills (basic word processing applications and electronic spreadsheets, email and the Internet); strong communication and interpersonal skills; have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other team-members.
