Position Summary:

The Mobile Journalist will work on daily assignments to develop story ideas, contact sources, shoot short videos, and take pictures for posting to the Virginia Tech News site, the Virginia Tech homepage, the university’s official social media channels, and other platforms. Such assignments and tasks may occur concurrently, and will move from idea to finished piece within a few hours. The Mobile Journalist will also work across teams within University Relations to provide communications and marketing content for platforms that rely on a digital-first, create-once-publish-everywhere model. In addition, the Mobile Journalist will complete tasks that include posting site updates, editing copy, building pages, and scheduling email messages to audiences within the Virginia Tech community.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in communications, videography, broadcast journalism, or related field

Portfolio of work that demonstrates experience in web production and/or multimedia journalism in a deadline- and results-driven environment

Writing and editing experience

Experience working with content management systems

Experience and confidence using current video production equipment – including cameras, editing systems, lighting instruments, and sound-recording equipment

Experience with audio, video, photo editing, and publishing software

Understanding of HTML coding and responsive web design

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree or specialized training that equates to an advanced degree

Specific experience using Adobe Creative Suite and Mac-based systems and software

Experience working with live-streaming video for varied audience sizes

Experience or knowledge working with captioning systems

Regional and national travel for the purposes of writing or producing stories, which may include overnights and weekends. Must have the ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.

Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed to cover particular events.
