Position Summary:

Virginia Tech is inviting applications for two Postdoctoral Associate positions in the Integrative Plant Pathology Lab at the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Virginia Beach, VA. The selectees will be part of a research team that strives to understand the biology and epidemiology of boxwood blight caused by Calonectria pseudonaviculata (Cps) and produce science-based sustainable solutions to this emerging disease of national significance. Proposed research priorities include: (i) pathogen biology: soil population dynamics in the context of microbial communities, virulence specialization and variations among Cps populations from different host plants, responses to fertilization and plant physiology; (ii) integrative biology: vector transmission, interactions with Volutella buxi and other microbes; and (iii) disease mitigation innovations: alternative and cover crops, biocontrol, network analysis of Cps interstate and global movement, and its survival at sites of accidental introduction. Each selectee is expected to take on a few of the above research projects in her/his areas of interest and specialty. They will have opportunities to interact with scientists at Cornell University, North Carolina State University, Oregon State University, USDA-ARS, and other collaborating institutions of this multistate project.
These positions are available immediately with a 1-year initial contract and possible extension subject to individual’s performance and available funding. Salary is commensurate with experience plus a very competitive health and retirement benefits package.

Required Qualifications:

A PhD in plant pathology, microbiology, or a closely related discipline and effective communication skills including the ability to write research reports and publish in refereed journals are required.
Must have an earned PhD no more than 4 years with a minimum of 1 year eligibility left.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge and skills in epidemiology, microbial ecology and/or molecular biology are desirable.
