Working Title: Early Intervention Specialist
Role Title: Education Coordinator I
Posting Number: SW0170198
About Virginia Tech:

Virginia Tech is a public land-grant university, committed to teaching and learning, research, and outreach to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world. Building on its motto of Ut Prosim (that I may serve), Virginia Tech is dedicated to InclusiveVT—serving in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. We seek candidates who adopt and practice the Principles of Community, which are fundamental to our on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion, and to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Virginia Tech actively seeks a broad spectrum of candidates to join our community in preparing leaders for the world.

Position Summary:

The Early Intervention Specialist is a part-time (20 hours) position. The position is responsible for using a modified BASICS model to facilitate individual sessions with high-risk students, both mandated and self-referred, with the intent of exploring their use of alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs which may be hindering their potential. The BASICS model is typically a series of two conversations which use a feedback report to generate discrepancies between a person’s substance use and other goals. Motivational Interviewing is then used to enhance the person’s motivation to make their desired behavioral change.
In addition to individual sessions, this position will have the opportunity to facilitate groups. Our department currently offers two groups focused on substance use, Making Positive Choices (MPC) and SMART Recovery. Making Positive Choices is a requirement for referred students who may not need the intensity of an individual session and benefit from a facilitated discussion around their alcohol use with peers and a trained facilitator. SMART Recovery is an option for students who would like to explore abstaining from alcohol and/or drugs.
As part of Hokie Wellness, this position will have the opportunity to participate in educational presentations and programming as well as outreach events if available and/or as needed.
In addition to direct service, this position will have individual and/or group supervision and may participate in team meetings.

Required Qualifications:

- Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Public Health or other related fields
- Demonstrated experience in providing direct services to people with substance use diagnoses
- Proficiency in Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Experience with case management and record keeping
