The position primarily provides field support for the Peanut Variety and Quality Evaluation (PVQE) and crop physiology research program at the Virginia Tech Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Duties will include but are not limited to assisting with planting, maintaining, and harvesting peanut and sorghum, and data entering in computer; collecting soil and plant sample and preparing and mailing the samples for analysis at appropriate laboratories; assisting with all aspects of field work, installing deer fences, weather stations, and soil and grain moisture probes; stationary picking of peanut, and taking plant height, biomass, plant moisture measurements for biomass sorghum; assisting a postdoc with a biomass for bioenergy sorghum research including with remote sensing and simple image analysis.
Ability to work in an agricultural setting during the entire growing season including during adverse weather conditions, work on week-ends when necessary; experience with field small plots data collection and tabulation; and experience to work independently and in a team are required.
Experience with peanut and sorghum harvest by hand, with a stationary picker and with a bigger combine; ability to write and read a plot plan for small research plots; and reasonable understanding and experience with soil and grain moisture sensors are preferred
