Position Summary:

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) is seeking a database administrator to be responsible for the administration and operation of databases in a dynamic research environment. In addition to day to day database operations, the position also involves providing consultation to researchers regarding database design, performance, and usage, as well as providing vision and guidance regarding major database decisions. The position requires work both individually as well as collaboratively with other members of the VTTI IT team and researchers. The ideal candidate must be able to communicate and interact effectively with this diverse clientele. Due to the nature of the environment, the ability to be flexible and a motivated self-learner is vital.
The database platforms in use at VTTI are primarily IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server. The DB2 environment is the primary repository for VTTI’s research data and currently houses hundreds of terabytes of research data in an MPP infrastructure running on Linux. VTTI uses Microsoft SQL Server for major research projects, especially for a management and inventory database with replication to numerous distributed laptops. In addition, VTTI also uses MySQL and PostgreSQL in miscellaneous roles as appropriate, for example as utility databases for LAMP/LAPP applications.

Required Qualifications:

-Doctorate/terminal degree in Information Technology or related field. Significant work experience and a lesser degree may be considered instead of the advanced degree.
-Demonstrated experience running multiple relational database systems, especially IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server. Significant experience with other database systems (e.g. Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
-Demonstrated SQL and data modelling skills
-Thorough understanding of and experience applying principles of database security
-Demonstrated experience with performance tuning of databases
-Experience designing and operating backup and recovery procedures for production database systems

Preferred Qualifications:

-Understanding of and experience managing large parallel database environments in a scientific data warehousing environment, especially with significant sensitivity requirements (e.g. human subject research), using clustering or partitioning to parallelize data access
-Experience supporting researchers using scientific analysis tools, notably SAS, Matlab, and R, as well as writing SQL
-Experience configuring and operating database systems in high-availability configurations
-Experience with database replication, especially with SQL Server
-Experience writing system shell scripts or using high-level programming language, such as Java, C#/.Net, C++, especially for automating various database administration tasks (backups, log parsing, data loading, etc.)
