Position Summary:

The Associate Vice Provost for Communications (AVPC) for the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost is responsible for the strategic communications for directing and implementing a comprehensive, integrated communications and marketing program for the Provost’s Office. The AVPC provides strategic communications leadership in a highly collaborative model with the Senior Associate Vice President for University Relations. The communications officers located in the academic vice president and vice provost units will report to and collaborate with this individual.

The AVPC will report to the Executive Vice President and Provost and the Senior Associate Vice President for University Relations and will work with the academic vice provost and vice president units to integrate the broad communication and marketing goals of the Provost’s Office. This individual oversees the communication strategy and creates and directs the preparation of a wide variety of written documents (including speeches, position papers, news and feature stories, communications plans, correspondence, press statements, presentations, publications, resolutions, and similar items) for the Provost’s Office. This individual will work well in teams, often taking the lead, and sometimes serving in a support role with other communications personnel.

Areas of responsibility include: all Provost’s office-based communication activities; strong collaboration with University Relations on selected media relations as well as news distribution; video production; design; and photographic services. The AVPC will coordinate content for Provost’s Office web pages as well as provide social media management and direction for mobile and other digital platforms. The AVPC will work with Advancement, gift officers, and leadership on strategically aligned communications for the Provost’s Office to support large philanthropic donor requests.

This position is expected to articulate and guide implementation of communication strategies and tactics relevant to graduate and undergraduate recruiting, faculty recruiting, inclusion and diversity, and senior management recruiting, and will ensure the consistent implementation of university identity standards in the Provost’s Office communications.

This position is considered Emergency Personnel.

Required Qualifications:

The Associate Vice Provost for Communications should have demonstrated experience in:
-strategic communications planning and implementation for higher education, government, nonprofit, or educational and/or professional media organizations;
-public presentation and communications skills;
-addressing the public through audio, video, and the written word;
-comprehensive understanding of the print, electronic, digital, and social news cycles;
-a broad understanding of developing and emerging communications technologies and platforms;
-a proven ability to interpret analytics and data in order to build or adapt communications strategies around such findings;
-social media, web and market segmentation;
-contemporary journalism ethics;
-representing and incorporating diverse constituencies and perspectives in communications;
-communication strategies for higher education;
-working professionally on confidential issues.

This position requires a master’s degree in public relations, communication, journalism, marketing, or a related field, or bachelor’s degree with relevant experience that equates to an advanced degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

-experience in public relations management in higher education;
-experience in providing communications support at the executive level.
