Position Summary:

The Center for Regenerative Medicine, Virginia Tech, Department of Biomedical Sciences, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology. The laboratory studies the mechanism regulating vascular remodeling and neural tissue damage following traumatic brain injury and stroke. We employ a variety of novel tools including but not limited to small animal surgery, chimeric and transgenic animal creation, Laser Doppler analysis, mini-pump brain infusions, cell culture, qPCR and Western Blot analysis. The successful PostDoctoral candidate is expected to work independently to accomplish research projects related to traumatic brain injuries and tissue recovery. The multidisciplinary approach includes an in depth understanding of the biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, underlying the mechanisms controlling vascular and neural tissue plasticity.

A highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate is sought to perform advanced studies in molecular and cellular biology related to murine brain injury. The candidate will also be expected to attend lab meetings, maintain laboratories in a clean and good working order and maintain a high level of organization, data analysis and manuscript preparation. Opportunities to compete for external fellowships will be encouraged.

The appointment will be housed in the College’s Center for Regenerative Medicine.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have a PhD or MD/PhD degree in the Neurosciences, biological sciences or related field. Qualifications include but are not limited to small animal surgery, osmotic pump infusions, cerebral blood flow analysis, animal colony maintenance, brain tissue histology and immune-labeling, performing cell culture experiments using endothelial cells and neural stem cells, tissue harvesting and qPCR, Western Blot analysis, data collection and analysis, and laboratory organization. Must be highly self-motivated after initial supervision, willing to learn new experimental skills, and to work individually and collaboratively with a variety of individuals for more than one projects simultaneously. Must be proficient in animal studies, including surgeries. Must be able to safely move and handle up to 40 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with small animal surgeries, histology, westernblot and aPCR, primary cell line maintenance, cell signaling analysis, data analysis and data preparation for publication. Excellent scientific writing and manuscript preparation required
