Position Summary:

The Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured faculty position at any rank, with preference for an associate or full professor, effective August 2017.

This faculty search is part of a cross-college cluster hire being conducted across the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities and Creative Technologies & Experiences Destination Areas (, which are two of several focused Virginia Tech initiatives to recruit and support world-class groups of faculty colleagues that bridge disciplinary strengths.

We are seeking a colleague who will assist in building our Departmental, College, and University strengths in the study of all dimensions of ubiquitous, mobile, and creative computing at the interconnections of the digital and physical worlds as individuals, groups, organizations, and systems interconnect these domains of complex action. In the coming years, the number of Internet-connected devices will more than double, intrinsically changing the ways people interact with technology, their environments, and each other; however, fundamental mobile computing challenges have yet to be adequately addressed for these new technologies. New opportunities abound for bridging geographic and information distance through technological systems, providing seamless connections between spaces, decoupling human activity from prescribed locations, breaking information barriers, and expanding access across society to name a few. This cluster hire will foster interdisciplinary collaborations that explore these challenges through the lens of technology, human behavior, governance, ethics, and business.

Successful candidates will embrace the technology-mediated intersection of the arts, design, science, and engineering and seek to holistically explore integrative approaches to thinking and problem solving. Faculty in this cluster hire will train transdisciplinary scholar-practitioners (students and faculty) who are well-versed in the unique processes of collaborative environments; take on opportunities that require an integrative approach and transformational outcomes both in terms of research outcomes and individual growth and that cannot be solved within any individual discipline; develop curricula that engage multiple disciplines to holistically address the newfound real-world opportunities; and pursue opportunities through an external network of collaborators, from local community to global industry.

We seek outstanding candidates in all areas of ubiquitous, mobile, and creative computing. Candidates will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of research groups and faculty within the Department, College, and University, including the Center for Human Computer Interaction (, the Institute for Creativity, Arts and Technology (, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (, and the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science ( The ISE Department is comprised of 30 full-time faculty with approximately 550 undergraduate students, 170 master’s students, and 90 doctoral students. The undergraduate and graduate ISE programs are currently ranked 5th and 9th, respectively, by U.S. News & World Report.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates are expected to lead innovative and high-quality research within the Destination Areas described above with a focus on mobility and creative computing, build a strong sponsored-research program, develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students. Candidates for this position at the senior level should have a record of achievement commensurate with a senior faculty member and are expected to provide organizational and research leadership, mentor junior faculty, and build collaborative relationships, both within the Department and across the College of Engineering and University. The position requires a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.
